Pacquiao’s Victory, can we learn business discipline from it?

December 7, 2008, Philippine time. All eyes were glued on the television and every Filipino was very happy when Manny Pacquiao won over Oscar dela Hoya.  From this victory, can we learn something that can be applied in business?

Yes we can… and we should. And what can these be? There are actually a lot of them, and here are just some:

Focus

Pacman has a lot of things to do aside from boxing. He has a hosting stint on local television, some businesses he invested in, social obligations he has to attend to, and of course his family. But when the need arise to focus on his mission, focused he was, and his sight was set on his desired result – to win the match.

Every entrepreneur should always be focused on what he wishes to accomplish in his endeavors. Taking everything that distracts his attention aside, until he has established his business.

Commitment

Pacquiao did everything and he committed himself in his objective. He trained hard, diet well, disciplined himself. And this is were self-sacrifice also comes in. Pacman left his kids home and flew to Las Vegas to prepare and train himself from the game.

This type of commitment and self-sacrifice should be emulated by every entrepreneur.

Research

The match did not start inside the ring. It started even before the match was agreed upon, and as soon as it was set, they did their assignment. Together with his team, Pacman viewed videotapes of Dela Hoya’s matches to find his weakness. Aside from that, they also did some self-assessment to find Pacquiao’s weakness and in which department he needs improvements.

This is where most entrepreneurs fail. Plunging into the business world without even doing some research – the feasibility of the business, target markets, demographics, and the reliability of the data gathered.

Most often, they eyes were glued on the projected bottom line that were presented to them, disregarding the most important question which is “how to get there?”

Support

Pacman knew how to get support. His training coach, his sparring partners, his team, and the Filipino populace knew his mission and backed him up on it. They supported him all the way.

Perhaps you have heard of a ‘self-made man.’ This type of person did not actually ‘arrive’ by himself. He just knew where to find support, he knows how to communicate, made his objectives clear to others and was able to get their cooperation.

Hearth

Above everything else. What sets Pacman apart from the Golden Boy and other boxers is the heart that he puts into the fight. He has a bigger opponent, but it didn’t matter – he has a bigger hearth.

As the entrepreneur will always experience, things will not be handed to him on a silver platter, he has to work for it – and really work hard.

The entrepreneur will always have bigger tasks, and obstacles set before him. But as long as he is focused, committed and willing to sacrifice, did his assignment and researched about his business and most of all he puts his heart into it, he has already won half the battle.

These are just some of the points that can be analyzed from the recent Pacman victory that can be applied in an entrepreneur’s own battle in his business.

  8. And one important business learning is to know where the market is. Oscar knew it, Pacman definitely agreed with it and now, they’re both happy boys and million dollars richer!

That was one of the best marketing endeavor in sporting history, it created so much hype that the world – even none boxing aficionados watched the fight. And that was the works of a good businessman indeed.

  10. @ blogRebel, you were not lazy. you’re just taking a break. you SEO’d too much on this Pacquiao fight, hehe..

@ Cyril, you’re right. dela Hoya lost in the match, but he is still a million dollar richer. this is indeed one of the best marketing tactics that has ever been made – and it was even a non-title match!

  18. Haha, you’re right Roy. With a few hundred dollars from the adsense stuff, it’s enough motivation also but then once in a while, need to take a break.

Just like this post, any business needs to earn money, and a good preparation is the key. For every Pacquiao fight, the bloggers are happy – we may not earn millions like what money errr, Manny earned, but sure they’re enough to buy you starbucks coffee (but I don’t like coffee – beer nalang. :)
