Celebrity contestants?… Yes, it’s still about business

Have you noticed that most game shows on Philippine TV today have celebrity contestants at one time or another? In fact, some game shows ONLY have celebrities as their contestants. Well, with the television being nothing but another marketing media, these celebrities are there for a various reason.

One is to entice curiosity about the show and perhaps boost the ratings. When you have a game show that is really boring and just won’t click with the televiewers, presenting it with celebrity contestants gives it a different persona. People love watching celebrities, even if they sing out of tune, don’t know the lyrics, or they make fools of themselves.

Much like having a too common a product or service, you need to create an impressive packaging. Make a presentation that will surely catch the consumers’ curiosity to at least take a look at the product. One that will make it standout among the other products in the shelf.

Another purpose of the celebrity contestants is the make the episode supposed to be special. Okay, so you’re having your regular dose of the show with common people joining the game. You even get involved by shouting as they attempt at the price or frown when they lost. And then you’ll suddenly see your favorite celebrities in the show. Didn’t that just added flavor to your regular servings?

Just like your business who seems to be doing well as it is, offering something new every now and then to reward your customers will keep their loyalty – anniversary or holiday sale, freebies, special packaging just for the occasion, or bundled offers. Anything that could be short-lived but will have a great effect on your bottom line.

One more factor that celebrities are invited is to give value to show. With the celebrities in tow, not only will these shows get sponsorships, they can even dictate the price of the advertisement depending on the celebrity being presented in the show.

How can you translate this to business? Well, if you can’t afford to pay for celebrity endorsers, get authorities on the product you’re offering to endorse it – whether they are mothers, students, professionals, oldies, depending on your niche. Be sure to back it up with a consistent quality of course. This doesn’t have to be in prints or on TV, word of mouth is a more effective method of reaching your market. This will definitely add value to your product. Try to give free samples to your specific group, and see how your sales go up.

Celebrity contestants? Don’t hate them, they’re just doing their job. Hate the game shows, hehe… but seriously, if we analyze their actions, we can actually learn a lot of business principles from them.

  2. Well, actors popping up on game shows are just but natural. What sickens me is that even politicians show up to join reality TV shows just to get that needed media mileage.
