Holiday pay guidelines

The whole country will observe Holy Week next week. It is a week that only have two working days, which prompts the labor department to remind employers of the holiday pay guidelines.

As stated in the Proclamation 1699, declaring the list of official holidays in the Philippines, Araw ng Kagitingan (April 9) was moved to April 6, the Monday nearest to it.

April 9 and 10, meanwhile, are Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, which leave only April 7 and 8 as the official working day for the day.

However, there would be some companies/businesses which would require their employees to report to work even on the stated holidays.

The Deparment of Labor and Employment (DOLE), reiterates the guidelines, as they remind employers to grant employees who will work their holiday pay.

Under the guidelines, an employee who will work on a holiday is entitled to 200% of his daily basic salary for the first 8 hours, and an additional 30% of his hourly rate, for work rendered in excess of 8 hours.

Should the employee chooses not to work on a holiday, he is still entitled to 100% of his daily rate provided he was present or was on leave with pay on the working day immediately preceding the holiday.
